When clicking on linked images or web pages on the internet that may seem legitimate a common scam can take you to a malicious website attempting a fake antivirus scan. The antivirus scan is not real, it displays fake results in order to manipulate someone to download and install spyware or malicious programs. The best thing to do if you get one of these messages is to simply close your internet explorer browser and do not click on the original link again. If you are familiar with task manager you may end task/process for iexplorer, or as an alternative simply close internet explorer by clicking on the “X” in the upper right hand corner of your browser, an example is circled in red. However DO NOT CLICK anywhere on the windows security alert, even the red close button “X” in the Windows Security Alert window is meant to be malicious and trick you. It is always recommended to run legitimate antivirus/malware software to help guard against threats such as these when browsing the web.
